Captain Sun Comics by Pastor Bryce Morgan
My brother-in-law, Pastor Bryce Morgan of Way of Grace Church in Buckeye, AZ, has published two excellent superhero graphic novels in the last few years, with his most recent one coming out at the end of 2014. My title to this review highlights the two aspects of this work that stand out to me: Rescue Me's educational value and its fun presentation.
Educationally, I believe that there is nothing more important for children to understand than the gospel according to Jesus. Author and creator Bryce Morgan has done a terrific job in representing the gospel as explained in Scripture, articulating it clearly for children and giving parents a great question guide in the back of the book for them to facilitate further discussion.
Regarding its fun presentation of a heavy and important topic, both Mitch Martin and Bryce Morgan have done a stellar job in bringing the characters to life. Martin's artwork is beautiful and vibrant, reminding this long admirer of comic book art of the inspirational work I grew up on. It pops off the page with fluid action and dynamic color, leading the reader joyfully to the "Capitol City Chronicle" page at the end of each chapter that contains the biblical lesson. Also, the "Super Nova" edition adds much more fun to the creation of the project including artists' sketches and the original work by Bryce himself.
Bryce and Mitch have done a great job in providing an excellent and needed resource to parents, guardians, and pastors. In an age when superheroes dominate the entertainment industry, it is important for our youth to first understand who the One True Hero is: Jesus Christ. May their work bring the truth, love, and hope of Christ to the youth within each of our spheres of influence!
Captain Sun and The Army of Fear, Bryce Morgan's follow up to the Cap's first adventure, Rescue Me! Under Blackout's Shadow, is an excellent resource to teach kids about the allure and power that superheroes have on our culture with a gospel-centered approach. Here are a few reasons why this book is a great purchase:
Well, that last reason is arguably more like an opinion. All-in-all, the book is a great way to help kids understand that true heroes don't just smash bad guys and save the world everyday, but that each of us are called to be a kind of "hero understudy" to the real hero of our world, Jesus the Messiah. It brings the concepts of good and evil to the forefront and sheds light on how the Scriptures reveal the human need of salvation from our own evil and how trustworthy the God of the universe is in providing the perfect remedy in his own sacrifice. Captain Sun is a great book for kids, and it will also surprise you in how it teaches the message of the gospel to adults as well!

Great Book for Parents, Guardians, Children's Ministries, and VBS!

- The questions at the end of the book help walk parents and teachers through a study of the topics the comic brings up.
- The art is excellent and fun, displaying a well-told superhero action story that all kids can connect with.
- It is wholesome material that you can let your kids read without worrying about any vulgar messages.
- Captain Sun is awesome!
